Step Aside is a Percussive Tap Dance Company in the Washington, D.C. area, founded in 1995 by Barbara Bingley, a native
of Washington, D.C. Barbara's idea was driven from her desire to have group where adults could perform, along with an
opportunity, for herself and other members, to choreograph. Barbara looked for many adult students to join her company
at the Knock on Wood Tap Studio, where she is a member of the faculty.
Step Aside, presently under the direction of Cindy Hsu, is comprised of tap dancers and instructors from the Knock
On Wood Tap Studio in Silver Spring and the surrounding Washington D.C. area. Since their creation, the group has performed
at First Night Silver Spring, Washington's Annual Tap Fest (National Tap Dance Day), Dance Place's Annual Tap Fest, Tappers
With Attitude annual concerts, Morgan State University, Knock On Wood Tap Studio events and showcases and at Union Station
as part of Black History Month. In 1998, Step Aside performed with Diane Walker and Tappers With Attitude as part of
the Smithsonian Institution's "Woman Hoofers Past and Present" program. Step Aside
will celebrate its 10 year anniversary this May at Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown, Maryland.
In addition to choreography created by Step
Aside dancers, Step Aside performs pieces choreographed by some of
Washington's finest tap artists including Washington's 'Tap Lady', Yvonne Edwards, co-director of Tappers With Attitude, Renee
Kreithen, Artis Brienzo, formerly of the National Tap Dance Ensemble, and former Tappers With Attitude (TWA) members Noble
Potts and Rita Wilson. Josh Hilberman, tap dance artist extraordinaire from Boston, MA, choreographed "Landscape" for
